Jeffery Joseph Vance was an extraordinary young man. He was an outstanding athlete and a gifted scholar. He played goalie for Carolina United, a Premiere soccer team. He played soccer and basketball at East Chapel Hill High School and tennis and basketball at Phillips Middle School. Despite his numerous extracurricular activities, he maintained excellent grades and was looking forward to playing soccer in college. He was an avid Duke Basketball fan.

JJ was also a very kind and gentle person who loved children. He was a summer camp counselor at the Museum of Life and Science and the Carolina Friends School. He wanted to grow up to be a geneticist just like his parents.
He traveled frequently with his parents. His favorite trip was to Hiroshima, Japan, where he was struck by the intensity of the effects of the atom bomb.
At fourteen years of age, JJ was unexpectedly stricken with a fatal blood clot. The cause of the clot remains unknown.
