Special Seniors Recieve 2002 JJ Vance Scholarships
Congratulations East Chapel Hill School seniors Hadley Thom and Philip Locke were awarded the JJ Vance Memorial Scholarships for 2001-2002.
During 1999-2001, Hadley Thom was Conference Champ and All-State in cross country and track. The multi-talented athlete also played basketball, winning the Most Valuable Player award as a freshman and the MC Hustle Award as a sophomore. An outstanding citizen in the community, she worked with Habitat for Humanity, and served as a tutor and counselor for students with educational and emotional concerns. Even with her many extracurricular activities, Hadley performed at an exceptional level in her academic work at East Chapel Hill High School. She has begun a new set of adventures as a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Philip Locke epitomizes the successful student-athlete. An outstanding member of the East Chapel Hill High School Football Team for four years, he was the Junior Varsity Most Valuable Player during his sophomore year, and won the Wildcat Award and achieved All Conference and All-Area honors his senior season. Locke credits the organization, responsibility and strong work ethic required for sports as a major reason for his success in school. He also participated in Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), a rigorous academic program at East Chapel Hill High School. Philip currently pursues his dream of studying engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
JJ Vance Memorial Scholarships are awarded to deserving graduating seniors at East Chapel Hill High School. The scholarship was established by the family and friends of JJ Vance, who was a student-athlete at East Chapel Hill High School at the time of his death in 1998.
