Special Seniors Recieve 2004 JJ Vance Scholarships
Congratulations to JJ Vance Memorial Scholarship recipients Roman Piskarev and Shaina Wahl.
Roman Piskarev

Varsity Tennis

The scholarship committee especially recognizes Roman's remarkable achievements at East Chapel Hill High School (ECHHS). When Roman immigrated to the United States in middle school, he didn't speak English and had played very little tennis. Through hard work, true grit and determination, he has excelled in both skills. According to Roman, sports have enabled him to expend his excess energy so that he could focus on his homework. Roman's career goal is to become a physician involved in world health. He will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall.
Shaina Wahl

Varsity Field Hockey and Lacrosse

The scholarship committee also acknowledges Shaina's special accomplishments. When she transferred to ECHHS at the beginning of her junior year, she transformed a difficult transition into a positive experience. Shaina has excelled both academically and on the athletic field. She says that sports have taught her many life lessons including the importance of teamwork, leadership and focus. Shaina's career goal is to become a physician. She will attend Duke University in the fall.
JJ Vance Memorial Scholarships are awarded to deserving graduating seniors at East Chapel Hill High School. The scholarship was established by the family and friends of JJ Vance, who was a student-athlete at East Chapel Hill High School at the time of his death in 1998.
